〈곁에 머문 부재 (そばにある不在)〉 Close Absence 

Takahashi Kentaro takes the sense of distance between social incidents and his own life as a starting point to chronicle forgotten events and histories as well as the personal scars they leave. In this work, the artist traces the life of the first testimony giver on the wartime sexual violence under the Japanese military, whom he came to know while living in Okinawa for several years. Takahashi encounters the places once inhabited and the landscapes that were witnessed and records the accounts of those who offered support or documented this life. In search of the traces, the artist expresses the affective process of witnessing forgotten pasts and events. The exposure of the artist’s hand within the frame of the photographs introduces a restorative touch, as he goes beyond the role of recorder to connect himself with the wounded.

타카하시는 자신의 삶과 사회적 사건간의 거리감에서 출발해 잊힌 사건과 역사, 개인의 상처를 기록해 왔다. 이 작업에서 그는 몇 년간 오키나와에 거주하며 알게 된 일본군 ‘위안부’ 첫 증언자의 삶을 추적한다. 그가 살았던 장소와 목도했을 풍경을 직접 마주하고, 생전 그를 돕거나 그 삶을 기록한 인물들을 찾아가 기록하여 잊힌 과거나 사건을 목격하는 과정의 정동을 표현한다. 또한 프레임 안에 자신의 손을 노출하면서 기록자를 넘어 상처받은 이들과 자신을 연결하며 회복의 접촉을 수행한다.

髙橋健太郎は、自らの人生と社会的な出来事との距離感を出発点に、忘れられた事件や歴史、そしてそれらが人びとに刻んだ傷を記録してきた。本作では、数年間過ごした沖縄での暮らしのなかで出会った、日本軍による戦時性暴力の初の証言者の人生をたどる。かつてそのひとが生きた場所や、目にしたであろう風景と向き合い、生前に支えとなった人びとや、その人生を記録した者たちの証言を聞き、記録する。消え去った痕跡をたどりながら、忘れられた過去や出来事を目撃することの情動を映し出していく。そして、写真のフレームの中に自らの手をさらすことで、単なる記録者の立場を超え、傷ついた者たちと自身をつなぐ、回復のための手のひらを差し出す。
