Announcing the 2019 Joop Swart Masterclass Nominees

Very happy and honored to be nominated for this.

2019 Joop Swart Masterclass

The World Press Photo Foundation is pleased to announce the 245 nominees for the 2019 Joop Swart Masterclass, from which the 12 participants will be selected.

The panel of international nominators was substantially updated this year and 61 new nominators from all over the world were added in an effort to improve regional representation. We would like to thank all our international nominators who helped highlight the nominees.

Of the 245 nominees, 52% identify as female and 48% identify as male. In terms of global regions, 13% are from Africa, 21% from Asia, 25% from Europe, 12% from Southeast Asia and Oceania, 18% from South America and 11% from North and Central America.

Also updated for 2019 were some of the masterclass criteria:

  • There is no age limit for masterclass nominees and participants
  • Nominees and participants will be emerging and early-career image makers with 5-10 years of experience
  • The selection is based solely on nominations from the panel of international nominators
  • World Press Photo 6×6 Global Talent Program winners receive an automatic nomination to the masterclass if they fit the criteria

As in previous years, the winners of the Ian Parry Scholarship (Ezra Acayan and Salahuddin Ahmed), the IAFOR Documentary Photography Award (Ezra Acayan) and the PH Museum New Generation Prize (Alice Mann) have received automatic nominations to the Joop Swart Masterclass as part of their awards.

All nominees are currently submitting their application. The selection committee will then choose the 12 participants to be invited to Amsterdam for the masterclass in September. The chosen participants will be announced at the end of April.
